Peace & Quiet

If the mum you’re organising Mother’s Day for has a baby or tribe of under 5s, an afternoon (better, day) of peace and quiet is what she want more than anything: more than diamonds and gold; more than sandwiches and cake; so much more than handpicked daffodils. Pampering and peace are literal gold. Ockenden Manor, South Lodge and The Harbour Hotel, Brighton are three divine Sussex spas for a spot of child-free pampering and chilling.

The Perfect Sunday Roast

Is there a woman who doesn’t love a crisp roast potato and bowl of sticky toffee pudding and custard? The Salt Room do a magical sharing roast. The Sussex Ox use produce from their own organic garden to create delicious Sunday lunch. The Bull, Ditchling is a crowd-pleasing gastro pub with excellent facilities for kids. All three are noble options for a slap-up Sunday roast with all the family and all the trimmings (and none of the washing-up).

Thrills and Spills

For mums who don’t like to sit still and detest the idea of tea or a spa day… Go Ape in Crawley is an excellent option for all the family – the Treetop Challenge is the ultimate high ropes adventure if you’ve got older kids, little ones can have a go on the easier Treetop Adventure course or head out through woodland paths on a Segway. Such fun!

If you’ve already got plans for the day but want to gift a thrills and spills experience, you’d be hard-pressed to find something better than a track day and lunch at glorious Goodwood.

Get Crafty

Give the gift of a creative workshop. Flourish Sussex is running a one-off mum’s and daughter’s workshop on the Saturday before Mother’s Day. You’ll watch a demonstration, drink tea and eat homemade cake, make a wreath and take home a goodie bag. Perfect if you’re planning to spend Mothering Sunday without grandparents but want to do something special with your own mum or mother-in-law the day before.

Creative Feel are running a gorgeous watercolour lettering workshop in Hove’s GAIL’s. I can’t think of a more relaxing and fun way to round off Mother’s Day (and escape the kid’s tea and bath time). GAIL’s will supply tea, coffee and cake for the workshop; everyone attending will create their own hand-lettered stationery and take away a personalised kit to keep practising at home.

The Highbrow

Perhaps the Mum in your life is a bit of a culture vulture. Take or send her to the Duke of York’s cinema for a mid-day screening of arthouse classic The Dolce Vita. She can indulge in an old school film, popcorn, cake, coffee, glass of red. Relaxing Sunday afternoon perfection.

Classical music lover? Brighton Dome’s Sunday Morning Concert: The Aronowitz Ensemble featuring pieces by Schubert, Beethoven and Elgar could be just the ticket.

Or how about a day trip to Firle for a tour around the infamous Charleston House? An excellent tour with all the Bloomsbury Set’s scandalous Sussex secrets aired and an inside look at the house’s rich art history. There’s an excellent gift shop and tearoom on site.

A Boozy One

Sussex is swimming with award-winning vineyards. You can’t go wrong with Ridgeview Estate. Their Classic Tour runs on Sunday’s at 11am. She’ll enjoy a guided tour of the vineyard and winery, followed by a tasting in the stunning tasting room with panoramic views across the South Downs.

The Classic Sussex Stately Home & Garden

The Stately Home and Garden comes to us all at some point. But there are few as varied in their offerings as Wakehurst. Enjoy Mother’s Day lunch in the historic mansion, which includes entrance to the gardens. And then head off into the gardens to explore the bit that mum loves best.

Afternoon Tea

For some mums, perfection is a cake stand of endless sandwiches, scones and bottomless cups of Darjeeling (and a glass or 3 of bubbles). For the mum who truly loves afternoon tea, check out The Grand in Brighton. They’re hosting a really special child-friendly tea party for Mother’s Day. Every adult afternoon tea will come with a glass of rosé Champagne, along with additional special treats for Mum. Children will be indulged in their own tea with a selection of savoury goodies, icing-dipped seaside doughnuts, orange polenta cupcakes and chocolate brownies and a flute of lemonade or cup of hot chocolate.
