Based in the vibrant North Lanes of Brighton, Chapter Eight Design is a small personable interior design studio that brings residential and commercial interiors to life. We sat down to spend to ten minutes with founder, Ann Jones to find out more.

Talk us through your style & ethos.

We pride ourselves in not having an in-house style, as no one client and project is the same, we carefully tailor our approach to the style and personality of the client ( not forgetting their budget!).

Do you have a favourite room to work on for clients?

I love designing open-plan kitchens. The kitchen is the hub of the home. Families tend to spend most of their time in this space, creating lots of memories there. One of the many challenges in designing an open plan kitchen is to add personality to the large expansive open space, it is important to zone the kitchen, dining and living areas with colour, lighting, rugs and accessories so each space has an identity. We have successfully achieved this with our ‘room to grow’ scheme.

What is your go-to source for inspiration?

Charging our design batteries is vital – we are members of ‘The List’ House & Gardens, where we meet regularly and exchange design concept ideas. We also attend presentations and subscribe to the latest magazines, Instagram and Pinterest. I like to use Instagram to see where other designers are finding inspiration. Pinterest—as a source of inspiration. I use boards broken down by room type and then spend a few minutes a day pinning new things I have not seen before. But our favourite source of inspiration is our customers,  who bring us their dreams and ideas to develop.

If you could only use one fabric in your work for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Linen. It has an effortless style and is timeless. It can be specified for all sorts of furnishings and it’s eco-friendly and sustainable. We source many of our fabrics from Chelsea Harbour, where we have an excellent relationship and get shown the new fabrics that are being produced.

What has been one of your most memorable projects to date?

We have been very fortunate to have had very challenging and exciting projects from the get-go. Our first commission was an award-wining cycling coffee shop in Bruges- it was a very exciting project to be part of. Quickly followed by our feature in @25beautifulhomes with our ‘room to grow’ scheme. Following on this year, we have several other commissions underway. In September 2020 we had a revisit of the concrete house in Grand Designs which will be aired in October 2021. Although residential interiors are our foundation, the variety of work so far has been exhilarating.
