Since first opening in Soho in 1988, Mildreds has pioneered the plant-based scene in London with its fresh, vibrant and innovative dishes. Thankfully, they’ve now opened a second restaurant in St Martin’s Lane in the Covent Garden area. Mildred’s is a vegetarian restaurant that is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, so in the name of research, we’ve tried it out for you! Here’s the verdict:
Mildred’s interiors offer a fresh, contemporary vibe, and to my delight, upon arrival is filled to the brim with gorgeous foliage too. Thoughtfully placed modern artworks line the walls and we ask if we can be seated by the window for the optimal people-watching spot.
To drink we treated ourselves to a couple of cocktails; a ‘Lychee Rose Martini’ (Hayman’s dry gin, lychee, rose & lime) and a ‘Mazcal Mule’ (Banhez mezcal, passion fruit Szechuan, lime & pimiento ginger beer). Both cocktails were 10/10 and very affordably priced which is a breath of fresh air in these parts of London!
We opted for a medley of starters and then a medley of mains to share. I don’t know about you, but this is my favourite way to dine with friends. The service was prompt, even though there was a sudden mass rush of people who hadn’t booked, and there were only two staff to look after the whole restaurant. My favourite dish from the visit was the ‘ ‘tempeh laab club cultured, prik nam pla dressing, leaves and herbs’. This was the perfect balance of indulgence and saltiness with a tangy dressing to cut through the tempeh laab.
Other stand-out dishes to highlight that are well worth a visit for are the ‘Roman artichokes, panelle, roasted pepper and pine nut cream’ and my second favourite dish which was the ‘Confit garlic labneh, zhough and blistered primavera’.
Unfortunately for me, the menu wasn’t that adaptable to be gluten-free but I still had a decent amount dishes to choose from, this is just something to bare in mind if you’re intolerant or are coeliac.
Overall, Mildred’s vegetarian restaurant is a brilliant choice if you’re shopping in the area or visiting to go and see a show. It’s a laid-back, brilliantly located restaurant and makes for an affordable and tasty lunch choice. I would be really interested to visit again to try out a weekend brunch or more of their tasty cocktails. They have a really wide range of drinks, sharing plates and reasonably priced cocktails so this definitely needs to stay on your list of places to visit in Covent Garden.
