Katherine Richards is a Sussex-based interior designer and artist. She has recently launched a new contemporary art gallery in Hove that challenges the way artworks are conventionally displayed by presenting them against carefully designed, minimal interior backdrops. Located at her design studio on Portland Road in Hove, East Sussex, Katherine Richards Art Gallery opened to the public on 8th October. Below, we’ve asked Katherine to share 3 of her favourite interior design projects.
London Apartment
Our clients’ eclectic and quirky taste distinguishes this fascinating project. The bespoke display unit shows off their collection of loved items, so calling it the ‘Love Wall’. Unafraid of using patterns together with textures and colour, we were able to give them the theatrical home they dreamed of and through which their personalities shined. It was a fabulous collaboration and a joy to work with clients who were so open to new and bold ideas.
Bringing in a design expert who truly understands, listens and guides you will help you make choices you might never have made on your own. You are likely to surprise yourself and are bound to feel excited by the results.
Sussex New Build Farmhouse
This was a new build in the depths of the Sussex countryside. The clients wanted an open, contemporary home that would feel warm and comfortable during the winter months, opening up to the stunning views in spring and summer. Casual but stylish, and with a bespoke edge, it was a wonderful project to work on.
The wall mural in the children’s TV room was hand-painted by Katherine and bespoke lights were made to fit into it across the design, giving it a truly unique finish. Adding bespoke touches to a room will always make it feel personal and make the house resonate with your individual story.
Victorian Home
This was a creative, interesting home with an eclectic collection of lovely art and a large number of fascinating books. A cosy, comfortable home, it was in need of de-cluttering and our client wanted practical, stylish storage solutions. We found this project entirely satisfying as we transformed it, without losing any of the essence of comfort.
There is a myth that suggests that employing an interior designer means they will tell you what you ‘should’ do with your home. Katherine dispels this myth by working closely with you, supporting and enabling you to identify what your likes and dislikes are, and what you need in order to feel entirely comfortable in your space.
Finding a designer you can trust is the most important factor. If they are listening to you, you’ve probably chosen the right one.
