Already a firm Brighton favourite for its vibrant Ottolenghi style salads. Foodilic has recently dedicated its Western Road branch to being fully vegan.
With summer approaching I cannot get enough of their all-you-can-eat salad bar. It’s just £7.50 to sit in on the natural wooden furniture, people watch and have a healthy feast. In a rush? Grab a take-away box for £5 for a small or £10 for a large – just pop in, grab a box, fill it up, pay and go fully armed with well beyond your 5 a day. Stand out salad for me was the green bean salad – fine green beans, peas and mangetout all with the perfect crunch and a touch of walnut oil and orange zest. Those little touches made it taste far superior to the modest price tag.
Beyond salad, restauranteur Peter Ilic has developed a menu that encourages curiosity. There’s something for whatever mood you’re in – from banana blossom alternatives to fish and chips to their vegan burger which is already fast becoming a customer favourite. The plant-based pastas such as tagliatelle alfredo are made with cashew nut cheese and cherry tomatoes. I like how it is all comfort food, but it’s not ‘dirty’, everything has a healthy, fresh feel to it with nice attention to flavour and detail.
But we have to tell you about the brunch, Served until 4pm- this was up there with one of the best ‘full vegan’ breakfasts I’ve had in Brighton. The spicy Jamaican ackee and tofu ‘scrambled eggs’ uses garlic, spinach, tomato and Himalayan black salt, plus butter beans and aubergine ‘bacon’. The flavours were incredible, and we’re definitely bringing everyone back there next time we’re on the hunt for a healthy brunch spot.
A special note has to go out to the drinks selection too, there aren’t many spots in that area that you can get a great smoothie and their’s were brilliant. I had the ginger ninja (£3.50) packed with carrot, pear, orange, lime and so much ginger to keep my cold away. They also have a great range of ‘Granny’s secret juices’ – one blueberry juice had 361 blueberries in it, and you could feel it was packed with anti-oxidant power – so delicious.
The branch has received a 5-star food hygiene rating, extended its opening hours and offers a ‘BYOB’ arrangement for those dining after midday. All the cakes are raw and vegan, so they’re egg-free, dairy-free and also gluten-free. Under 3’s eat free and under 10’s are half price at all times – a great help for any other local mums like me.
The lovely Foodilic folk have also given us a discount code to get you an extra 20% off. Just use code ‘FD19365’ .
Are you a Foodlic fan too? Let us know if you are and if you’ve tried the new Western Road offer. We’ll be back for brunch and that green bean salad again very soon.
