365: Tell us about your work as a Nutritional Therapist, what does the majority of your work look like?
Jane: The majority of time is spent helping my busy clients to understand and resolve the root causes of their health and weight issues through bespoke nutrition, habit change and lifestyle programmes. I’m really passionate about DNA testing, and using nutrigenomics to have a better understanding of how her clients respond and metabolise certain nutrients, and whether they’re predisposed to certain conditions and diseases.
365: You talk a lot about your “food first” approach to Nutrition, can you explain more?
Jane: I’m a firm believer that even if you don’t enjoy cooking, you can still support your health goals with nutritional therapy. While the demands of modern life can make healthy eating seem out of reach or too complicated, it does not have to feel like that. To me, food is so much more than just nutrition, it is about fun, family, friends and community. It excites and unites us. I understand how powerful healthy food is in supporting the body and this motivates me to continue to raise awareness of the impact that good nutrition can have in preventing and combatting disease.
365: Can you explain what nutrigenomics is?
Jane: When I feel like I need a more scientific diagnosis of a clients needs, I recommend additional functional testing of your genes, hormones and gut microbiome. Private testing is more detailed than that performed by a GP as we (Nutritional Therapists) look for a wide range of markers. Your genetic predispositions can tell you a lot about yourself, most importantly, your health and wellbeing. We are all unique and your individual genetic profile can help you to optimise your wellbeing and use personalised nutrition and lifestyle to change how these genes would otherwise be expressed. This provides me with a snapshot of your immediate health and can indicate a clear and targeted route to help you feel better.
365: You’ve been in the press a lot speaking about how diet choices can impact our sleep. Can you share some top tips?
Jane: I always ask my clients about their sleep. What you eat during the day can have a massive effect on how you sleep at night, similarly, poor sleep can really have an effect on how you eat the next day so it becomes a vicious cycle when poor eating habits/sleep are involved. Some of my top tips includes; eating foods that are real and unprocessed, eating three proper meals in a day and avoiding late-night snacking of caffeine later in the day.
