Pram review: Bugaboo Butterfly travel pram

It’s 4:30am on March 24th and i’m about to set off on holiday with my baby, maybe not so ‘baby’, (20 month old) and you bet i’m not travelling light. If there’s anything I have learnt in the last twenty months it’s that I will, probably, for the forseeable, be travelling with a lot of baby gear.

Another thing that I learnt pretty quickly as someone who travels a lot? Your travel pram is going to become your best friend, or worst enemy. Whether you have a seasoned ‘pram napper’ or a rogue ‘runs everywhere’ kind of toddler, the needs for a travel pram can vary widely, but for me, the thought of lugging a hefty full-sized pram around an airport or holiday destination, in addition to the pure terror of booking anything expensive into the hold, is enough reason to invest in a travel pram.

As it stands, i’m actually in the camp of having ‘not a pram napper’, therefore my travel pram needs are based more on ease of travel, minimising the amount of carrying, and having a back-up sleeping location if in desperate need. Having said all this, my child does (to my amusement) only sleep in a pram for her childminder. They really are peculiar, aren’t they?

Cabin friendly pram

Whether I have spent my own money on a product or not, I don’t like checking expensive items of value into the hold, and I’ll do everything in my power not to. The Bugaboo Butterfly isn’t officially listed on any airlines’ sites to my knowledge but I didn’t have any problems putting this in the cabin on my recent British Airways flight meaning that I could take advantage of the pram all the way to the gate, which was inevitably a long walk away and then easily fold it down with one hand to pop in the overhead locker.

Aesthetics and functionality

I chose the ‘Desert Taupe’ colour as my butterfly of choice and aesthetically speaking, it’s a dream. Why I ever listened to people who said light colours were an error I will never know. Lighter colours show up way less damage than darker colours, word of warning! Now let’s get onto the key functional elements:

  • One-second fold and unfold (this should be standard in my opinion as I don’t think I have had two hands free since the day I gave birth)

  • Lightest pushchair in the bugaboo range (7.3 kg)

  • Ultra-compact fold to store in small spaces

  • Suitable for air travel, Fits overhead compartments IATA-compatible

  • Underseat basket holds 8 kg

  • Large adjustable seat for first-class comfort (I would have to agree with this statement as my relatively feral toddler did in fact love being in this pram)

  • Full suspension, easy to steer with one hand

  • Extendable UPF 50+ sun canopy with breezy panel

  • Almost fully flat one-hand seat recline

  • Car seat compatible (adapters needed)

  • Extended 4 year warranty

One of my favourite functional elements isn’t officially listed on the site which is that underneath the seat there is a very helpful leg extension which meant that my leggy toddler had a much more comfortable seated position during her travels in the Bugaboo Butterfly.

Would I recommend to a friend?

10/10 recommend. The Bugaboo Butterfly travel pram has become integral to my day-to-day life and is a stylish travel companion. Whether it’s being used for daily errands and nipping in and out of shops, throwing in the back of the car, or travelling far and wide, it’s aesthetics, functionality and one-handed fold mean that for me, it’s a perfect travel pram.
